A UI/UX designer's day is much more than sitting in Figma. Research, meetings, user flows, wireframes, feedback, testing and collaboration all shape the work.
Quick answer: A typical UI/UX design day can include reviewing user problems, discussing requirements, researching users, mapping flows, designing interfaces, prototyping, getting feedback, testing ideas and collaborating with product and engineering teams. The exact mix changes by project and role.
A day in the life of a UI/UX designer
There is no single schedule that every designer follows. A designer working on early product discovery may spend more time researching, while someone preparing a release may spend more time refining interfaces and collaborating with developers.
Start by checking project updates, feedback, priorities and pending design tasks. Review what changed since the previous day and decide what needs attention first.
Discuss requirements, user problems, constraints, feedback or product decisions with product managers, developers and other stakeholders.
Depending on the project, work on user interviews, competitor analysis, research synthesis, journey mapping, task flows or defining the problem.
Translate the problem into possible solutions. Create flows and wireframes before investing heavily in visual polish.
Develop interface layouts, components, typography, spacing, responsive states and interactive prototypes in a design tool such as Figma.
Review the work with teammates or users, identify issues, compare alternatives and iterate. Good design work is rarely finished in one pass.
Document decisions, prepare specifications or prototypes, clarify edge cases and collaborate with developers as the product moves toward implementation.

What a UI/UX designer does NOT do all day
It is a common misconception that UI/UX designers spend the entire day creating attractive screens. Strong design work includes thinking, research, communication, iteration and validation. Visual design is important, but it is only one part of the process.
How AI is changing the daily workflow
AI can help designers explore concepts faster, organise information, generate content variations and support research synthesis. Designers still need to decide what problem matters, which solution is appropriate and how it should be validated.
A UI/UX designer may research users, discuss requirements, create flows and wireframes, design interfaces, prototype ideas, review feedback, test solutions and collaborate with product and engineering teams.
No. Figma is a tool. UI/UX work also involves understanding users, defining problems, structuring information, designing interactions, communicating decisions and iterating based on feedback.
Working hours depend on the organisation, role, project and employment arrangement. The daily activities also vary between discovery, design, testing and implementation phases.
Meetings vary by team. Designers may participate in product discussions, research sessions, design reviews, workshops and developer collaboration, while also needing focused time for design work.
Coding is not the core requirement for most UI/UX design roles. Technical understanding can still be useful when working with developers and designing feasible experiences.
It can be a good fit for people who enjoy combining creativity with structured problem solving, user understanding, communication and iteration.
